United Methodist Women (UMW) is a  faith-based membership organization of laywomen within the United Methodist Church.  UMW members are committed to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ in community with other women and advocating on behalf of women, children and youth around the world. United Methodist Women has been in mission for more than 140 years.

Here at CUMC, we have a UMW chapter which meets monthly on the morning of the second Tuesday.  We support missions  such as Red Bird Mission in Appalachia, Cooper Community Center in Boston, Jonnycake Center, Welcome House (homeless shelter), Domestic Resource Center and United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMW prays for its missions and organized fundraisers to support them monetarily.  We attend regional UMW meetings to stay abreast of issues such as human trafficking, environmental issues including global warming and world hunger. Some members participate in the UMW reading program. Reading selections change annually and are organized for specific goals, e.g. education for mission, leadership development, etc.

UMW Purpose: The official UMW mission statement is adopted by the General Conference of the United Methodist Church: United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive  fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
